LensCulture Photobook Prize

LensCulture is an international photography platform focused on discovering, promoting, and connecting contemporary photographers with audiences, curators, publishers, and the wider photography industry. Its competitions are designed not only to recognize individual bodies of work but also to provide selected photographers with exposure, publication, and career opportunities. For the Photobook Prize, LensCulture has partnered with Nazraeli Press, an established publisher of photography books known for working with internationally recognized photographers.

The LensCulture Photobook Prize is designed for photographers with a completed or substantially developed body of work that has not yet been published as a book. Rather than requiring applicants to already have a book dummy, the competition asks photographers to submit 20–30 images, a project statement, and a short biography. A brief description of the intended book is optional. The winner receives a fully funded photobook publication with Nazraeli Press, including design, production, and international distribution. The prize also includes promotion through both LensCulture and Nazraeli, as well as an exhibition opportunity in Los Angeles. Shortlisted photographers receive additional career-development support, while finalists receive international promotion.

The interesting proposition here is that the prize addresses one of the hardest steps in a photographic career: turning a strong body of work into an actual book. Instead of rewarding an existing photobook maquette, the competition gives the winning photographer and publisher the opportunity to develop the book together from the submitted project. The partnership with Nazraeli Press is the significant part. The prize isn't simply funding a self-published book; it places the winning project within an established photography publishing operation, with professional editing and design, a defined print run, distribution, and promotion. The prize is therefore best suited to photographers who already have a coherent, book-length project, rather than someone simply looking for funding to continue shooting. The absence of a required book dummy also lowers the barrier for photographers who have the work but have not yet translated it into a physical publication.
