W. Eugene Smith Fund

The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund has been supporting documentary photographers since 1980, carrying forward the humanistic tradition of the legendary photo-essayist. Over 45 years, the Fund says it has awarded more than $1.3 million to photographers whose work engages with the human condition—from conflict and social change to environmental, cultural, scientific, and humanitarian issues. Its alumni include Sebastião Salgado, James Nachtwey, Cristina García Rodero, Graciela Iturbide, Paul Graham, Donna Ferrato, Gideon Mendel, Paolo Pellegrin, and many others.

The flagship W. Eugene Smith Grant is designed to help photographers begin or complete a significant documentary project. For 2026, one recipient will receive $30,000, with two additional finalists receiving $10,000 each. International applications are welcome, and applicants do not need to be professional photojournalists. The jury puts substantial weight on the project's intellectual and humanistic merit, as well as whether it can realistically be executed.

This is very much a project grant, not a portfolio prize. A project can still be in its research or early shooting stages, but work that is already completely photographed and only needs a book or exhibition is not eligible. Applicants submit up to 40 images, a project description, and a detailed proposal explaining how the funding will be used. AI-generated imagery is not permitted. There's also an unusually tangible legacy attached to the award: recipients ultimately contribute 12 prints and 12 digital images to the W. Eugene Smith Legacy Collection at the International Center of Photography. And looking at the Fund's history, the opportunity has considerable photographic pedigree—Salgado received the grant in 1982; Nachtwey in 1993; Pellegrin in 2006; and more recently Maxim Dondyuk, Irina Werning, Adriana Loureiro Fernández, and Maen Hammad have been recipients. For the current cycle, applications opened July 1 and close October 12, 2026. The deadline will change from year to year, but the Smith Fund itself is one worth keeping on the radar.
