The Howard Chapnick Grant

The Howard Chapnick Grant was established by the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund in 1996 to honor Howard Chapnick, the longtime president of the Black Star photo agency and an important mentor and advocate for documentary photographers. Unlike the Fund's better-known grants for photographers, the Chapnick Grant supports the infrastructure around documentary photography—the educators, researchers, editors, archives, publications, and organizations that help the field develop.

The Chapnick Grant supports programs rather than individual photographers that make a meaningful contribution to documentary photography or photojournalism through education. Eligible work can include direct teaching as well as research, publications, archives, exhibitions, online resources, and other educational initiatives. The program is particularly interested in organizations that demonstrate a strong commitment to their communities—including underrepresented communities—and contribute to the development of photography in their region. Programs must already be established rather than simply proposed; the Fund requires them to have been operating for at least a year.

This is an unusual photography grant because the photographs themselves aren't the point. The Chapnick Grant recognizes the people and organizations building the ecosystem that allows documentary photography to survive and grow. The 2025 recipient, Uvas y Hojas, illustrates the idea well. What began as a small gathering of photographers in El Pescadero, Baja California Sur, developed into a cultural center and bookstore serving as a community hub. The grant can support the less visible work that makes photographic culture possible: education, access, research, archives, publishing, exhibitions, and community-building. International organizations are welcome to apply, and the grant is deliberately broad about what constitutes meaningful educational contribution. Individuals are not eligible, and the program is not intended to fund the creation or production of an individual photographic project.
