Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) - Moulin à Nef (France campus)
About

The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA) operates two residency locations: its main campus at Mt. San Angelo in Virginia and Moulin à Nef in Auvillar, France. The French center extends VCCA's multidisciplinary residency model into the historic Gascony region of southwest France, giving artists an opportunity to work in a small international community surrounded by centuries of architecture and cultural history.

The Opportunity

Moulin à Nef hosts four Fellows at a time for periods of concentrated creative work in the medieval village of Auvillar. Artists work from the VCCA/Moulin à Nef Studio Center and live in the nearby Maison Vieilhescaze, a four-bedroom house next to the studios. The setting is very much part of the experience. Auvillar sits along the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, with historic sites, villages, food and wine country, and larger cultural centers such as Toulouse within reach. The residency offers a quieter and more intimate alternative to a conventional urban artist residency.

Worth Knowing

Moulin à Nef is deliberately small and relatively independent. Fellows are responsible for their own housekeeping and most meals, and VCCA notes that Auvillar's steep streets can require fairly strenuous walking. It is therefore best suited to artists comfortable with a degree of self-sufficiency and who see the surrounding environment as part of the creative experience. There is also an important eligibility distinction: the Moulin à Nef fellowships are available to VCCA Fellows and specially invited French artists, rather than operating as a completely open international residency competition. For artists who qualify, the appeal is difficult to replicate: a private creative workspace, a four-person cohort, and the chance to spend an extended period working from a medieval French village rather than inside a conventional residency complex. The application cycle changes annually, making this another VCCA opportunity worth monitoring.
